When Tom Maguire (Ritter) loses his job then injures his back, he is unable to leave the apartment of Irene Dunbar (Sagal)--who has just fired him. Now the only way Irene can get Tom to leave is to marry him so her insurance will pay for an operation. But when Irene starts dating an optometrist and an insurance investigator probes the marriage, the scheme unravels ... just as Tom and Irene realize their true feelings for each other.
