Thala, and our Captain Cool - the maestro who turns pressure into a calm breeze.

Profile

MS Dhoni - popularly known as Mahi, MS or Thala - is not just a player in the TATA IPL, he is an institution. The Chennai Super Kings skipper has been the face of the TATA IPL and his franchise since the inaugural season in 2008 and has led them to five titles. Dhoni's leadership, finishing skills, helicopter shot, and calm demeanour under pressure have made him one of the most revered cricketers in IPL and Indian cricket history.

As a batter, Dhoni has scored 5082 runs in 251 matches at an average of 38.79 and strike rate of 135.92.. His tally includes 24 fifties. Dhoni's best season came in 2013 when he scored 461 runs at an average of 41.90 as CSK reached the final. He scored more than 400 runs in an IPL season twice more after that.. He is the most capped IPL player (250 matches) and has played the most matches as captain in IPL history, leading CSK and Rising Pune Supergiant.

However, his most impactful knocks have come in high-pressure chases where he has sealed victories with his trademark cool. In the TATA IPL auction, Dhoni has always been CSK's first-choice retention. Ahead of the 2022 season, he was retained for Rs 12 crore.

Off the field, Dhoni lives in Ranchi with his wife Sakshi and daughter Ziva. He is also one of India's most marketable athletes with endorsement deals worth millions. On the international stage, Dhoni is regarded as one of the greatest captains ever, having led India to victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. As a wicket-keeper batter, he scored 4876 runs in 90 Tests at 38.09, 10773 runs in 350 ODIs at 50.57 and 1617 runs in 98 T20Is at 37.60.

At 42, Dhoni continues to defy age with his sharp glovework and ice-cool finishing. While he gave up CSK's captaincy in 2022, he returned as skipper midway through the 2023 season and led the team to a record-equalling fifth title. With speculation rife that 2024 could be his final IPL season, fans will hope 'Thala' Dhoni can inspire CSK to more glory before riding into the sunset.
