Shubman Gill has taken the TATA IPL by storm and established himself as one of the most exciting young batters in the tournament. The stylish right-hander, who represents Gujarat Titans, has been a run-machine in the last two seasons.
In IPL 2023, Gill was the Orange Cap winner amassing a whopping 890 runs at an average of almost 60 and strike rate of almost 160. His tally included 3 scintillating centuries and 5 fifties as he finished second on the annual run-charts behind only Virat Kohli's record tally of 973 in 2016.
Gill's best knock came in Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians when he smashed 129 off just 60 balls, the highest score ever in an IPL playoff match. That hundred, his third of the season, made him only the second Indian after Kohli to notch up three or more tons in an IPL edition.
Gill's stellar run helped Gujarat Titans reach the final in just their second season. In the TATA IPL auction, Gill was signed by new team Gujarat Titans for Rs 8 crore in 2022 and has repaid the faith with over 1500 runs in just two seasons.
The 24-year-old, who hails from Punjab, is one of the most sought-after cricketers in endorsements. He is single and it is speculated that he is dating the daughter of one of Indian cricket’s GOATs, although there is no official confirmation of the same.
Gill's exploits in the TATA IPL have also made him a regular in the Indian team across formats. Circa March 2024, he has played 25 Tests, 44 ODIs and 14 T20Is for India, cementing his place as an all-format star. He was particularly effective in ODIs in 2023 climbing to 7th in the list of most ODI runs in a calendar year by scoring over 1500 runs at an average of 63.36 and SR of 105.45.
With age on his side, Gill has the potential to shatter many IPL records and establish himself as an all-time great. For now, he will look to continue his dream run in the 2024 season. With his elegant stroke-play and big-match temperament, Gill is undoubtedly the future of Indian cricket.
