While Jo is a struggling writer with a casual job at a performing arts centre, Alice has achieved her childhood dream and is now a world-renowned cellist. Struck by Alice’s coolness towards her, Jo is compelled to revisit the past, recalling her nervous arrival at Silver Creek where she first met Alice. Both scholarship students, Jo and Alice begin the year full of excitement and promise and become fast friends. But, alone in the Australian bush with the other girls in their dorm and only the young Miss Lacey supervising, Jo and Alice find themselves in a brutal culture of bully or be bullied, dominated by alpha-girl of Red House: Portia. While Portia controls the dorm with unquestioned authority, she has a particularly powerful hold over Jo, who is drawn into her thrall with a mixture of fear and infatuation. Quickly, Jo finds herself risking her scholarship by breaking school rules and leaves her friendship with Alice behind. In the present, Jo is troubled by Alice’s reluctance to engage with her – suggesting that her memories of their past might belie a more disturbing truth. As Jo considers this, she is rattled by Portia’s sudden reappearance in her life – stirring up long buried feelings. Jo finds herself slipping into patterns from the past, threatening her friendships and her share house by embarking on an ill-advised relationship with her housemate Saskia.Show more
