Riding high on adrenaline from Portia’s approval, Jo takes part in a ruthless night raid on Yellow House. But in the cool light of the morning her confidence wavers as she’s identified as one of the perpetrators. A furious Miss Lacey informs Jo her parents have been informed. Called to the principal’s office, Jo is forced to come clean to her mother Caroline about the growing list of transgressions under her belt. Caroline tries to understand what’s happened to her good girl and Jo feels betrayed when her mother doesn’t stand up for her. Punished with a solitary camp, Jo ruminates on her bad behaviour and her promise to her mother to be good. This could be an opportunity for change, but within moments of returning to campus she explodes with rage at Portia and Sarah’s growing friendship. The one person who understands Jo’s feeling of vulnerability is Alice, but while Alice clings on to whatever crumbs of friendship Jo offers her, Jo lashes out in return. Soon Alice becomes the target of Portia and the other girls’ cruelty. As their unrelenting attacks continue, Alice finally breaks – in a terrifying and dramatic way. In the present day, Jo faces the complicated aftermath of sleeping with Saskia, and Ruby is frustrated to discover Jo has ignored her advice.
